How to Book Cheap Flights to Italy: Timing, Tools & Budget Airlines
Italy Flights Don't Have to Cost a Fortune
People pay €700 for flights to Italy. Other people pay €180 for the same route. The difference isn't luck. It's knowing when to look, where to look, and what to book.
Here's how it works.
The Timing Rules
Book 6-10 weeks out for the best prices. Not too early, not too late.
- 3+ months out: Prices are high. Airlines don't discount this far ahead.
- 6-10 weeks out: Sweet spot. Airlines are pricing to fill seats.
- 2-3 weeks out: Prices start rising. Last-minute Italy flights are expensive.
- Under 1 week: Don't. Pay €300-500 more than you need to.
Tuesday and Wednesday are cheapest days to fly. Friday and Sunday are most expensive. The difference can be €80-150 on the same route.
Shoulder season = cheap flights. April-May and September-October cost 40-50% less than July-August. If you have flexibility, this alone saves €200-300.
The Tools: Where to Search
Google Flights is the best starting point. Always.
- Use the calendar view to see cheapest days
- Use the map view to find cheapest Italian city to fly into (Rome vs Milan vs Naples can differ by €100)
- Set price tracking alerts for routes you're watching
- Explore mode: type "Italy" and see cheapest options from your airport
Skyscanner for cross-checking.
- "Everywhere" search: enter your departure city, destination "Everywhere", pick your dates — it shows cheapest destinations. Sometimes Milan comes up cheaper than you expected.
- "Cheapest month" feature: if you're flexible, it shows the cheapest month to fly
Neither site sells tickets. They find them. Always book directly with the airline or via their linked booking page.
Budget Airlines: What They Are and Aren't
Ryanair flies to almost every Italian airport. Base fares can be €19-49.
What Ryanair's €29 fare actually means:
- €29 + €2.50 payment fee + €29 cabin bag fee = €60.50
- Or: €29 + checked bag €35 + seat selection €8 = €72
- The "cheap" fare becomes medium-priced fast
What you actually get for free on Ryanair:
- One small personal bag (40x20x25cm — fits under seat)
- That's it
Tips to keep Ryanair cheap:
- Travel with personal bag only (strict size enforcement at gate)
- Don't buy seat selection (random seat is fine for most people)
- Use Ryanair's own payment card or PayPal to avoid fees
- Book directly on ryanair.com (third-party sites add fees)
EasyJet is similar but slightly more human about bags.
- One small cabin bag included in all fares
- Bigger bag costs €15-30 depending on route
- Generally less strict about sizes than Ryanair
Vueling connects Spain to Italy cheaply. Good if you're coming from Barcelona or Madrid.
The Big Carriers: When They Win
Budget airlines aren't always cheapest. Check:
- ITA Airways (Italy's national airline) — sometimes runs sales to fill off-peak flights
- Lufthansa, Air France — their economy fares via Frankfurt or Paris can undercut budget airlines on transatlantic connections
- Alitalia is dead. ITA Airways replaced it in 2021.
Which Italian Airport to Fly Into
Rome has two airports:
- Fiumicino (FCO): Main airport, 30 min to city center by train (€14). Use this.
- Ciampino (CIA): Budget airlines (Ryanair). Farther out, shuttle bus needed. €6-8 bus.
Milan has two airports:
- Malpensa (MXP): Main airport, 50 min to center by train (€13)
- Bergamo (BGY): Ryanair hub. 1 hour from Milan. Bus €10. Sometimes worth it if significantly cheaper.
Naples (NAP): Good for southern Italy, Amalfi, Sicily connections.
Venice (VCE): Actually called Marco Polo Airport. Water taxi to city center: €80. Bus/boat combo: €15. Bus to Mestre then local train: €8.
Flexible Dates = Money Saved
If you can move your trip by 2-3 days either direction:
- Use Google Flights calendar view
- Select ±3 days
- The cheapest window often saves €100-200
Flexible on destination too? "Rome or Florence" searches sometimes show huge price differences for essentially the same trip (trains connect them in 1h30).
