Milan Sports: Football, Cycling, Running, and What Locals Actually Do

Milan is a sports city. Two of the most famous football clubs in the world share the same stadium here. But sport in Milan is also everyday — cycling to work, running in the parks, gyms everywhere.

This guide covers spectating and participating.

Football — AC Milan vs Inter Milan

The Derby della Madonnina

When AC Milan plays Inter Milan, the city divides. The Derby della Madonnina is one of the most intense derbies in world football. Both clubs share San Siro (officially Stadio Giuseppe Meazza).

AC Milan:

  • Founded 1899, 19 Serie A titles, 7 Champions League titles
  • Colors: Red and black
  • Fanbase: Working class origins, now global

Inter Milan:

  • Founded 1908 (breakaway from AC Milan), 19 Serie A titles, 3 Champions League titles
  • Colors: Blue and black
  • Fanbase: Historically more middle class, also global now

Buying Match Tickets

Official websites:

  • AC Milan: acmilan.com
  • Inter: inter.it

Typical prices:

  • Tier 4 (cheapest seats, Curva): €25–45
  • Tier 3 (Secondo Anello): €45–80
  • Tier 2 (Primo Anello): €80–150
  • VIP/Tribune: €200+

Buy early — big matches sell out weeks in advance. Derby tickets are almost impossible last-minute.

Avoid touts outside the stadium — prices 3–5x face value and sometimes fake tickets.

  • Stadium tours: Available on non-match days (€17–20), includes museum
  • Match day tips: Arrive 30 minutes early, ATM inside for food/drinks, atmosphere builds from 30 min pre-kick

Serie A Schedule

Season runs August–May. 38 rounds. Milan clubs play home matches most weekends.

Check schedules: serie-a.it or the club websites. January–March is often the most competitive period.
