Train Travel in France: TGV, SNCF, Ouigo & How to Book
Why Trains Beat Flying in France
For travel within France, the train is almost always better than flying. The TGV network is fast, punctual, and connects every major city. Paris to Lyon: 2 hours. Paris to Marseille: 3h20. Paris to Bordeaux: 2h04.
No airport security, no 2-hour check-in, no baggage restrictions. Show up 10 minutes before departure, board, sit in a spacious seat, arrive in city center.
The French Train Network
TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse)
- High-speed: 300 km/h
- Connects Paris with Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes, Strasbourg, Nice, Montpellier
- Also international: Paris-London (Eurostar), Paris-Brussels, Paris-Amsterdam
- Seats assigned
- On-board: restaurant car, Wi-Fi (variable quality), power outlets
Intercités
- Medium-speed intercity trains
- Covers routes not served by TGV
- Slower but often cheaper
- Some routes: Paris-Clermont-Ferrand, Nantes-Bordeaux, Paris-Rouen
Transilien
- Paris suburban rail (Île-de-France region)
- For getting around Greater Paris: Versailles, airports, outer suburbs
- Uses standard metro/RER tickets
TER (Transport Express Régional)
- Regional trains within each French region
- Slower, stops at small towns
- Useful for exploring wine regions, Normandy villages, Brittany coast
Ouigo: Budget TGV
Ouigo is SNCF's low-cost TGV service. Same fast trains, fewer services, stricter rules.
What's different:
- Fares from €10 (Paris-Lyon), €15 (Paris-Marseille)
- Only one small personal item free (small backpack)
- Checked bag: €5 if booked in advance, €20 on board
- Cabin bag: €5 booked, €20 on board
- Departs from outer Paris stations (Marne-la-Vallée, sometimes Gare de Lyon)
- No changes or refunds after booking
When it's worth it: Short trips where you only have a daypack. The savings are real—€10 vs €60 for Paris-Lyon.
Booking Tickets
SNCF Connect (sncf-connect.com or the app) is the official booking platform.
- Works in English
- No booking fees when buying direct
- Save tickets on your phone
- Shows all fare classes
Price classes (TGV Inouï):
- Ouigo: cheapest, strictest rules
- TGV Inouï 2nd class: standard, usually €30-80
- TGV Inouï 1st class: larger seats, quieter, €50-120
- Business Premier: fully flexible, expensive
Booking tips:
- Tickets open 90 days before departure
- Prices rise as the date approaches—book early for popular routes
- Fridays and Sunday afternoons are most expensive
- Tuesday and Wednesday departures are cheapest
- Prems (Prem's) fares are non-refundable but very cheap—good if you're sure of dates
Eurail / Interrail Pass
For non-EU visitors, a Eurail France Pass covers unlimited train travel in France.
Worth it if:
- You're making 4+ long journeys in France
- You're combining France with other countries (Global Pass)
- You're flexible and traveling spontaneously
Not worth it if:
- You have fixed dates and can book Ouigo/Prem's fares
- You're only in Paris (metro not covered)
Note: TGV requires a reservation even with a pass (~€10 reservation fee per journey).
Practical Train Tips
- Validate your ticket: Regional and suburban tickets need to be validated (composted) in the yellow machines on the platform. TGV tickets (digital) don't need validation.
- Platform announced late: TGV platforms at major stations are announced 20-30 minutes before departure. Check the departure boards.
- Luggage: No restrictions on TGV. Store bags in overhead racks or luggage areas at carriage ends.
- Food: Bring your own or use the restaurant car. Station food is expensive.
- Wi-Fi: Exists on TGV but varies in quality. Download what you need offline.
