Where to Spend New Year's Eve 2026: Madrid, Edinburgh, Rio, New York and Tokyo Compared

Where to Spend New Year's Eve 2026: Madrid, Edinburgh, Rio, New York and Tokyo Compared

Twelve grapes in twelve seconds under a clock in Madrid. Underworld soundtracking the midnight fireworks live under Edinburgh Castle. Millions of people dressed in white on one beach in Rio. A crystal ball sliding down a pole in New York in front of a crowd that's been waiting since lunch. And in Tokyo, a temple bell rung 108 times in near silence. New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, and these five cities celebrate it in five completely different ways.

Some are free, one is mostly ticketed, and one means ten hours in a pen with no bathroom. Here's what each is really like, with the 2026 details already confirmed and a flag on the ones that aren't.

Madrid: The Grapes at Puerta del Sol

Spain's New Year is a countdown you eat: one grape per chime of the clock on the Real Casa de Correos, twelve in total, for twelve lucky months. The country does it in front of the TV; the brave do it in Puerta del Sol.

The square is free but capped. In recent editions the City of Madrid limited it to 15,000 people, cleared it from 9 p.m. and let people back in only through four filtered entrances (Calle Mayor, Arenal, Alcalá and Carrera de San Jerónimo) until it was full. The 2026 security plan hasn't been published yet, so expect something similar.

The local trick is the Preuvas on December 30: a dress rehearsal at midnight the night before, with DJs, the same clock and the same capacity limit.

  • Cost: free (supermarkets sell tins of peeled, seedless grapes).
  • Weather: cold and dry, nights around 2 to 4°C.
  • Book: hotels near Sol by October or November.

Spend the afternoon of the 31st walking the old center. The Trevurs audio tour "Habsburg Madrid: the Small Town That Became the Capital of an Empire" covers the streets around Sol and Plaza Mayor, and "Dark Madrid: the Inquisition, the Autos-da-Fé and a Court That Executed in Public" tells you what used to happen in Plaza Mayor long before anyone ate grapes there.

Edinburgh: Hogmanay, Fire and Underworld

Scotland takes New Year more seriously than Christmas, and Edinburgh's Hogmanay is a festival, not a party. The official 2026 program:

  • Torchlight Procession, Tuesday, December 29, 6:30 p.m.: a river of fire made by up to 15,000 torch bearers, starting from The Meadows. Torch tickets from £5.75 (ages 12+).
  • Night Afore Party, December 30: The Fratellis in Princes Street Gardens.
  • Street Party, December 31, from 8 p.m.: ticketed, along Princes Street, ages 12+, listed "from £10" on the official site (cheapest tiers sell first).
  • Hogmanay in the Gardens, December 31: Underworld headline West Princes Street Gardens and, for the first time, play the Midnight Moment fireworks live from the stage below the castle. Tickets from £79. Doors at 8 p.m., last entry 11 p.m.

Concert and Street Party tickets are separate. On January 1, First Footin' is a free, unticketed live music trail.

  • Weather: 2 to 7°C, often wet and windy; dark before 4 p.m.
  • Book: now.

The Old Town is darker than the fireworks suggest. On December 30, wander the closes off the Royal Mile with the Trevurs tour "Dark Edinburgh: Burke, Hare and the Body Snatchers", the story of the 1828 murders that supplied corpses to the city's anatomy schools.

Rio de Janeiro: Réveillon in Copacabana

One of the biggest free New Year's parties on the planet. For the arrival of 2026, Riotur reported more than 5.1 million people on Rio's streets, 2.6 million in Copacabana, with three stages on the beach and about 12 minutes of fireworks from 19 barges.

Most people wear white for peace, many jump seven waves at midnight, one wish per wave, and you'll see white flowers left in the sea for Iemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian goddess of the sea.

As of mid-October, the 2027 lineup and transport plan haven't been announced. In past years the Metro required special pre-bought tickets and Avenida Atlântica closed to traffic from the afternoon.

  • Cost: free on the sand; kiosks, hotel terraces and boats charge.
  • Weather: peak summer, 24 to 30°C and humid.
  • Book: months ahead; hotels often require minimum stays.

Before the party, give the old center a day. The Trevurs tour "The European capital that never should have existed in America" tells how the Portuguese court fled Napoleon in 1808 and turned Rio into the capital of a European empire.

New York: The Times Square Ball Drop

The ball drops at midnight on Thursday, December 31, 2026. Watching from the street is free, no ticket needed. In past years viewing pens opened from mid-afternoon and filled fast, so people arrived before 3 p.m. Once in, there's no re-entry, no bathrooms, no food, and no backpacks or umbrellas. The Times Square Alliance publishes the 2026 rules closer to the date.

  • Weather: about -2 to 5°C, standing still for nine hours.
  • Honest advice: unless you're a die-hard, watch from a bar.

To see Times Square on a calmer night, use the Trevurs tour "Times Square: A Century of Spectacle, Decay and Makeover", on how a corner of Midtown went from theaters to sleaze to the most photographed intersection on earth. The first ball dropped there on New Year's Eve 1907.

Tokyo: The Quiet One

In Japan, New Year (shōgatsu) is a family holiday. At midnight, Buddhist temples ring the joya no kane: 108 strikes of the bell, one for each earthly desire. Zōjō-ji, next to Tokyo Tower, is a favorite; crowds gather from around 10 p.m.

Then comes hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year. Senso-ji in Asakusa and Meiji Jingu get the biggest crowds from January 1 to 3; go early morning or late at night.

  • Cost: free (bring 5-yen coins for the offering).
  • Weather: clear and cold, 2 to 10°C. Many shops close January 1 to 3.

The Trevurs tour "Asakusa: the District That Burned Twice and Opened Again on Monday" covers the 1923 earthquake and the 1945 firebombing that leveled the neighborhood around Senso-ji.

Bonus: Sydney

Sydney is one of the first big cities to see 2027, with a 9 p.m. family show and the midnight fireworks over the harbour. The Royal Botanic Garden has free vantage points, the Opera House forecourt needs a free booking that opens December 26, 2026 at 10 a.m., and harbour cruises cost over AU$1,000.
